Another tale of woe; I had already seen this elsewhere a couple of weeks back and it all sounds so familiar. So much sympathy for the Mephams after all their years of work. I had thought what Moonstone in fact said, which is that the RSPCA are worried that these small rescues might get some of the donations that they could grab for themselves. I heard of a case recently where they descended on a lady who rescues horses and ponies after a tip-off from a "concerned member of the public" that the animals were too fat!! They spent the whole day there but fortunately she stood her ground and her family stepped in to help and advise the pet Mafia to leave.
The fact that the RSPCA has stopped helping strays means that many of these hard-working rescues who receive no funding are getting more and more people pleading for them to look after animals. So many people do not want to hand their pets to Mafia as they know that they will be put down. People would far sooner beg Celia Hammond or Cats' Protection to take them simply because they know they have a policy not to kill a healthy cat. They do not want to hand their horses to World Horse Welfare as they know that they do the same. "So and so is currently being rehabilitated in our rehoming centre in Norfolk",they boast in their mendacious press release believe me, that is rubbish. The horse they are talking about does not appear on their "rehoming list" and when you check the National Equine Database it will have "deceased" next to its name. So much for World Horse Welfare too.
RSPCA have so much time to spend (waste) on the small rescues like the Mephams ran, but little time to sort out the annual carnage which is called the Grand National. For the people who say "Thoroughbred horses love to run!" Yes, indeed they do, I had a TB mare and that is true. BUT they would never voluntarily run four miles taking in massively high and treacherous jumps. They will run flat out for a bit, skid to a halt, take off again, they hold their tails in the air and buck and rear and kick out at nothing. Last year, the winner, Ballabriggs, actually had to receive oxygen as the jockey, Jason Maguire, pushed him so hard to win. Another two horses killed this year, on top of (I think) five last month at Cheltenham, and the RSPCA Chief Executive, Gavin Grant (or maybe it's Cary Grant?)says this proves "it is not safe enough". Well, blow me down, like understatement of the year?? It's not been safe enough for ages, time they took on the rich people in racing - owners/trainers et al but they are happiest bullying people like the Mephams. Much easier victims you see. The ones who have not got the resources to fight back. And the fact that the Mephams had a 1000-signature petition and letters of support is NO HELP. I had letters of support from people including the Chairman of a local animal charity. Forget it, they are in cahoots with the magistrates, also they are hand in glove with money-grubbing vets...you scratch my back, etcetera. So horses will continue to die while they are snooping round fields with their cronies from World Horse Welfare, spying on ponies that are a bit too fat, or where a Thoroughbred mare aged 25 is a bit thin. And since World Horse Welfare is supposedly the leading equine welfare charity in the country, does anyone know if they have made a statement about the National?
